Maritime and Port Management

Rotterdam is the largest and most sophisticated port in Europe. With visits of 29.000 seagoing vessels, 105.000 inland waterway vessels and 3.500 cargo trains every year, Rotterdam is an important node in the international network of trade and logistics. The Maritime and Port Management Minor is the best preparation for students who want to work on Bachelor level in an international maritime environment contributing to the innovation of the Port of Rotterdam.

Program

The program follows the logistic chain from maritime transportation of goods, via the port, towards the inland transport system and vice versa. Every year there is a studytrip, in previous years to London, Antwerp and Hamburg.

During the first half of the semester the emphasis will be put on the Maritime transport:

  • Maritime Economics, Law and Insurance: The following themes will be dealt with: Shipping markets, Chartering, Shipping Finance, Maritime Casualties, Ship Sale and Purchase and Scrapping.
  • Maritime Technology and Operations: Course about the technical and operational aspects of sea transport like Ship operations and management, Registration & Classification, the handling of cargo on board ships and maintenance.
  • Maritime Business game: In this game you will be the owner of a fleet and you have run your global business in a profitable way.

The second half of the minor will be about management and development ports and the connection to the hinterland:

  • Port and transport Economics and Law: Port and transport economics. How do ports stay competitive and how do they keep up with the transition towards a greener future.
  • Port and Transport Technology and Operations: You will be introduced to the operational processes in port and have a closer look at the different types of terminals.
  • Sustainable Port development: In this course you develop a port in a sustainable and profitable way, taking into account the interests of all stakeholders.

During the minor you will also be involved in a research project in which you do practical research for a company in the maritime business.

Leerdoelen

After completion of the minor:
  • The student is able to show understanding of global shipping markets.
  • The student is able to make tactical decisions for a successful shipping company
  • The student is able to understand and contribute to the sustainable developments of a port
  • The student is able to make a general design of a greenfield terminal

Ingangseisen

  • Students from international partner universities of the RMI.
  • Students from other universities from the Rotterdam University of applies sciences (subject to excess of the maximum total amount of 10 exchange students).
  • Students should be in the third year of their studies.

Literatuur

Will be available at the beginning of the minor, without extra costs

Toetsing

A combination of written exams, assessments and assignments.

Are you a student from another educational institution and you want to take a minor at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, you can apply in 2 steps as follows:

1)        Register for the minor of your choice via the blue button Enroll. You can find this button at the top right of the minor's page.

Download and fill in the learning agreement

Submit this learning agreement to the Exam Board of your study programme.

Once the Board of Examiners has given its approval, please register for the minor in step 2 no later than 23-05-2025.

2)      After approval, register in OSIRIS Aanmelding of Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences via the link below (create an account first).

Osiris Aanmelding

Part of the registration process is to upload the following documents:

-   The learning agreement signed by you and by your institution;

-   A scan or photo of your passport or ID card;

You will receive a message from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences whether your application has been positively assessed or not.

In OSIRIS Aanmelding, you must also upload the Evidence Paid Tuition Fee (BBC) for the academic year in which you want to follow the minor. You can request the BBC from your institution after you have signed or issued an authorization for the payment of the tuition fees for the academic year in which you want to take the minor.

You will receive a message from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences when your application has been approved.
