Industrial Automation

Experience what it's like to automate production processes... Become a System Integrator!

Step into the world of Industrial Automation where you'll master the integration of production processes and systems. Our minor focuses on four main areas: Processes, Components, Information, and Integration. You'll gain the necessary skills to design solutions by choosing technologies. All done by making the right decisions for choosing components and connecting machines and systems.

Course content

Key Competencies You Will Develop:

  • Practical Implementation: Apply theory in hands-on projects using industrial robots, PLCs and SCADA.
  • System Integration: Automate processes by integrating sensors, actuators, PLC’s, vision, robots and SCADA. Having all working together.
  • Solution Design: Develop a system by choosing the correct processes, assembly order, design of grippers and tooling.
  • Safety knowledge: Know what safety in an industrial environment is about, and make your engineering choices in a substantiated manner.

The combination of the increase of information technology and the shortage of personnel has given rise to the need for automating and connecting processes and machines. The use of information in machines and factories results in more complex production processes. Therefor the knowledge on connecting machines and systems, analyze processes, choose technologies and the ability to implement the most suitable solutions has become complex, important and a highly valued skill.

Rooster

Course structure

  1. Connectivity (5EC): Master data communication and networking within industrial systems, focusing on network topologies, protocols, and field buses.
  2. Components and Robotic Systems (5EC): Learn about industrial robotics and (vision) hardware, including selecting the right components for best performance.
  3. Process and Safety (5EC): Visualize and document industrial processes, and learn to implement a process on a PLC or Robot .
  4. Project Industrial Automation (15EC): Design a solution to a real-world problem, utilizing all the skills and knowledge gained throughout the minor.

Toetsing

Assessment methods

The assessment in this minor consists of practicals, assesments and various  products such as technical documentation, the design of a SCADA system, writing a PLC program, generating proper diagrams, deciding on vision and robotic components etc. In addition, several opportunities for formative feedback are also included in the project. During the minor, students work both individually and in (multidisciplinary) groups.
